Tillman Gray

Tillman G. Gray was born April 14, 1840.

He enlisted October 22, 1861 at the age of 22 and was a Private in Company B, 42nd Tennessee Infantry of the Confederate Army. On February 16, 1862 he was captured at Fort Donaldson and sent to Camp Douglas, near Chicago in Illinois. On August 25, 1862 he was admitted to the U.S.A. Prison Hospital in Camp Douglas with pneumonia and was returned to duty on September 1, 1862. On September 4, 1862 he was sent to Vickburg to be exchanged.

On January 21, 1865 Tillman Gray gave his Oath of Allegiance to the United States in Nashville, Tennessee (only four months later Generla Lee surrendered).

Tillman married Caroline Smith October 18, 1866. Tillman and Caroline had the following children:

1. James Walter - born June 27, 1868

2. John Mark - born April 17, 1870 in Poplar Grove, Humphreys County, Tennessee. he died July 25, 1950 in Nashville, Tennessee.

3. W.T. - born August 18, 1871

4. Edward Lee - born April 1874 in Poplar Grove, Humphreys County, Tennessee. He died March 12, 1959 and is buried in Poplar Grove Cemetery, Humphreys County, Tennessee.

5. Mary Ann - born December 25, 1877 in Poplar Grove, Humphreys County, Tennessee. She died March 7, 1950 in Union City, Obion County, Tennessee.

6. Melvin Kelly - born April 25, 1879 in Poplar Grove, Humphreys County, Tennessee. He died February 27, 1933 in humphreys County, Tennessee

7. William Dee - born March 12, 1881 in Poplar Grove, Humphreys County, Tennessee. He died in 1939.

8. Daisy Jane - born May 28, 1885 in Poplar Grove, Humphreys County, Tennessee. She died October 19, 1967 in Joplin, Missouri

9. M.C. - born March 5, 1889 in Poplar Grove, Humphreys County, Tennessee. He died October 25, 1899 in Poplar Grove, Humphreys County, Tennessee.

Tillman died June 18, 1893 in Humphreys County, Tennessee. Caroline passed away April 20, 1903 in Humphreys County, Tennessee.
